9 Tips & Habits to Become a Great Airbnb Guest

Whether you're just getting started on Airbnb or you're a longtime, experienced guest, it's always in your best interest to observe proper Airbnb etiquette. One of Airbnb's most successful features is that guests can review hosts, and hosts can review guests. The bidirectional nature of these reviews holds both sides equally accountable to each other, which encourages better behaviour.

If an Airbnb host receives a booking request from someone with poor reviews, they have the option to reject it. So, we surveyed hosts from across Canada to better understand the common dos and don'ts of being an Airbnb guest. Here are 9 tips and habits you can do to be a great guest, receive glowing reviews, and stand out amongst the 150 million Airbnb users.

1. Review the entire listing before booking

It’s easy to get focussed on the photos of the property, but make sure to read the entire listing to get a good understanding of what's included and what you'll need to bring. You’ll be able to better set your expectations and significantly reduce the chance of misunderstandings or disappointments.

2. Read the guidebook and guest information

Hosts are often unnecessarily contacted about information that has already been provided. Details like the wifi password or how to use the fireplace are pieces of information likely already available to you. So once you’ve arrived and settled into your Airbnb rental, find the guestbook and read through it.

3. Respect the check-in and check-out times

Hosts will usually accommodate minor adjustments, but asking for multiple additional hours is not reasonable. Most rental properties are already on tight schedules with the cleaning staff, restocking household items, and general property maintenance. Additionally, if you're running late for your check-in, let your host know about it.

4. Be respectful and tidy up

Although not the majority, some guests leave the rental property filthy, move furniture around, and even take items from the property - all things to avoid. Before you leave, take the time to make sure the place looks like it did when you arrived. Any mess you've created, big or small, shouldn't be left behind. This includes doing your dishes, or at a minimum, loading and starting the dishwasher.

Also, even if your Airbnb rental is pet-friendly, be mindful about allowing your pet onto the furniture and bedding.

5. Communicate issues with your host

Tell the host as early as possible if you're unhappy with something. The vast majority of hosts will do everything possible to resolve any issue you may be experiencing. What you shouldn't do is stay silent only to mention the problem in your post-stay review.

6. Don't treat your host like a servant

Hosts genuinely love helping to make your stay as comfortable and memorable as possible. However, over-the-top demands at all hours of the day are not part of your stay.

7. Check out with your leftovers

No one wants to be wasteful with food, so many guests leave behind a variety of leftover items and ingredients like milk, an opened box of crackers or even last night’s takeout. Besides certain cooking essentials like olive oil or spices, be sure to leave with your leftovers.

8. Leave a review

It’s important to leave a review because they’re essential for guests and hosts to build trustworthy reputations and they’re critical information for future guests.

Don’t forget that you must submit your review a maximum of 14 days following your stay, and remember that you can also leave private feedback for your host - which is the right place to share minor issues and constructive criticism that the host can address without it negatively impacting their rating.

9. Share Your Airbnb Experience on Social Media

If you've enjoyed your stay and want to do something nice for your host, share your experience! It's a great way to spark conversations with your friends and also helps build your relationship with the host for future stays. #sharingiscaring
